A couple of months back, I required a boycott of the movie "Prince of Persia" due to the utilization of racebending - casting a white actor within the a part of a minority character.
Some mocked my call against racial insensitivity, however when it comes down to the important dollar, I've had the final laugh.
According to Box office mojo. com, by July 5th "Prince" had grossed $88 million dollars domestically. Its opening weekend - Memorial Day Weekend - introduced $30 million of this.
Flashback to 2009.
Pixar's Oscar-nominated "Up" reigned in the box office having a take of $68 million. Five weeks later, "up" had grossed $264 million.
Take it back another year to Memorial Day Weekend of 2008. The first "Sex and the City" film reigned supreme having a weekend take of $57 million. By July 4th the film had grossed $144 million.
It might be argued the films aren't a reasonable comparison because "Up" is really a Pixar family film and "Sex" were built with a built-in audience.
That's just frakking stupid.
Ever since "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" hit it big time, Disney (the studio behind "Prince of Persia) has programmed a large, loud summer popcorn movie for May.
The "Pirates" sequels filled the balance within the in-between years. "Prince of Persia" ended up being to plug the outlet prior to the fourth "Pirates" installment the coming year.
"Prince of Persia" had all of the earmarks (pun intended): strapping action hero, feisty female foil, big explosions and effects along with a PG-13 tone.
"Curse of the Black Pearl" opened at $46 million, when compared with "Prince's" $30 million. That's despite an additional day of the weekend for "Prince. "
This "Prince" isn't worthy of the name "Charming. "
Meanwhile, "Prince of Persia" were built with a built-in audience in the legions of video gamers. This audience's highest grossing film may be the first "Tomb Raider, " which grossed $47 million on its opening weekend in June of 2001.
I haven't calculated for that "suck" factor. I obviously didn't see "Prince of Persia, " but perhaps it sucked.
Then again, Used to do see "Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest. " That sucked - to the tune of $135 million on opening weekend.
Whether my along with other people's call to boycott the film made a positive change, people stayed away.
Would an actress of the correct Middle Easter descent made a positive change to the film's domestic box office? I can not say. But obviously racebending didn't help.
